Global Leadership Summit 2011 – Session 6

Cory Booker

Cory was elected mayor of Newark, New Jersey, in this thirties and in this session shared some of the tough lessons that he had to learn along the way.  So far he appears to have been very effective in bringing turn around to Newark, seeing crime reduce dramatically and the amount of affordable housing doubled.

He shared, what I suspect is an important line of thought for him.  He reminded us that in many areas of our life we have been hugely blessed by those who have gone before us.  They made sacrifices and left us a great legacy. We have a choice.  We can either feast on that legacy and grow fat, or we can use it for its intended purpose and build on it still further for future generations.  We need to stand, because people stood for us.

What impressed me most about Cory was his apparent motivation for serving as a politician.  He seemed to be concerned with making a difference and leaving the world a better place than he found.  We need more civic leaders like that!

What are we doing with the legacy that we have been giving?
