Drive – Dan Pink – Understanding motivation

When it comes to leading others it is pretty important to understand how to motivate people.  However, it turns out it is not as straight forward as we might have thought.

In this RSA video, Dan Pink summarises research that shows that the more we reward people for doing complex tasks (for example where creativity matters), the lower their performance.  Of course, this is good news for non-profit organisations who often do not have the ability to pay high wages!  Helpfully, Pink spends most of his time explaining what does work, all three of which are available to any leader.  The research shows that what really motivates people are:

  • Autonomy
  • Mastery
  • Purpose
