The link between climbing and leadership

I love climbing, but do very little of it these days.  When I do get the chance I go to an indoors climbing wall and do some bouldering (low level and without ropes).  As a result it is something that i do on my own.  However, most climbing is not like that, requiring at least one other person to help you stay safe.

One of the blogs that I follow is Alan Arnette’s ‘Climbing to end Alzheimer’s‘.  The website is one of the best that there is for keeping up to date on all those attempting to summit Everest, which is a very different climbing experience from that to which I am used!  In an interesting article he looks at the link between climbing and business leadership, and I would argue not just business, but any leadership.  It is a great look at the task of leadership and has some great stories from his own experience on Everest thrown in for good measure.

Here is the summary:

  • Preparation
  • Trust
  • Teamwork
  • Commitment
  • Judgement
  • Humour
